History of Morbi
It’s called once as Morvi, There were rivers of Milk and Ghee(Butter). This means Morbi was too prosperous. On that time Morbi was among the Strongest states of India. Morbi Was ruled by many Kingdom. From the Mughal Empire to Rajputs and Britishers. From Qutb-ud-din Aybak to Lakhdhirji Thakor… Sir Waghjee Thakor.
After the death of Waghjee Thakor, Prince Lakhdhirji Thakor announced the King of Morbi. He also did a remarkable job in the History of Morbi. In his time Electric powerhouse and Telephone exchange was built. He also built Temples, Technical High School and Engineering college. This college is now known as the name of ‘L.E.College’.
Morbi, often referred to as the "Paris of Saurashtra," has a rich and diverse heritage. The name "Morbi" translates to "City of Peacocks" and is believed to be derived from the local ruler's name or from the abundance of peacocks in the region.
The city was established as a princely state in the 17th century under the rule of the Jadeja Rajputs. Morbi State was one of the progressive states in Saurashtra and witnessed modern advancements even during the pre-independence era. The rulers of Morbi were known for their vision in infrastructure, town planning, and architecture — many of which still stand as landmarks today.
In 1948, after India gained independence, Morbi acceded to the Indian Union and later became part of the Saurashtra state. With the reorganization of states in 1960, Morbi was incorporated into Gujarat. Today, it is a thriving district known for its ceramic industry, engineering works, and vibrant culture.
British Era
During British rule, Morbi was among the few princely states that embraced modernity. The city saw early development of railway links, electricity, and civic services under the enlightened reign of Sir Waghji Thakor. The Morbi–Wankaner narrow gauge railway, built in the late 19th century, connected the region to trade routes and helped boost the local economy.
Post-Independence Development
Post-independence, Morbi transitioned into a hub of industrial innovation. The city embraced modern municipal governance and saw significant investments in infrastructure, education, and manufacturing. With the emergence of Gujarat as an industrial state, Morbi played a central role, especially in ceramics and clock manufacturing.
